I Almost Quit

J Richard Byrd -- I Almost Quit

Good morning,

Can I be transparent with you?

This morning I almost gave up and quit planting this church. I am sure many of you have been in the same position in life on many occasions. I mean, donations and finances haven't been going well. Attendance has been minimal. The attacks on my company and family have been excruciating, to say the least.

So i found myself in a position of absolute desperation and depression.

I really was at my wit's end. I thought to myself did I really miss God on this? Why isn't he talking to me? Why aren't the funds coming? How can we have a church, if there is no money and no people? Are you sure you called the right person to lead this movement?

Several times I was tempted to get on the phone and call my pastors and tell them I am finished, I am going to back to running my company full time or even going back to the legal field where I could at least get an advance or something. But I couldn't pick up the phone. I still heard a small voice saying you can make it. (who said God had stopped talking).

This morning After dropping my wife off at her early appointment, I wanted to listen to the new Beyonce album (imagine that a pastor who likes Beyonce - lol) her song "Love on Top" - just kept playing in my head. As I waited for my playlist to update on my iPod - I played a podcast from Perry Noble. WOW did it minister to me. (if you are not podcasting -please see us). Here are a couple of things God said through Perry.

Strategy over Spirit Sucks
If God has declared it, you don't have to pray about it. Just do it! ( going to preach that one day)

If you can accomplish your Vision without God's provision, He may not be in the mix.

Listen to God and Do What He Says
God never calls us to do things that are easy.
If you are following God it is always going to be risky. You are always going to feel like your back is to the wall.

God Never Called You to Play It Safe.

Some of you know - I am a Big Thinker - a Big Dreamer, but a slow doer. My style is to pray about it, plan it, strategize it, then hold it in so long that the urge to do it goes away. (Just being honest). I often suffer from analysis paralysis. Which I now know is a complex to be perfect and a fear of failure.

This church is a major undertaking and I am seeing that some of my old habits are creeping in. I have for the past few months been slowly putting this movement together. Being very careful. Perhaps overly careful. Not because God told me to, but because I was afraid of getting it wrong.

A good friend of mine gave me great advice the other day. He said

"Get out of the way and let God Do what He wants to do. (here is the key point)
You Just Agree."

So I realized, over this week God had been speaking. LOUDLY. It wasn't that He wasn't doing enough. I wasn't doing enough.  In fact, I was playing it too safe. God doesn't bless fear. I was called to do radical things, which requires doing radical things. Let me take that back. It requires just Doing What He Says.
BIG DREAMS REQUIRE BIG ACTIONS

God is Bigger than any mistake You can Make.

These words have set me free. I am turning in my fear membership, my desire to be perfect, and my procrastination card. We are turning up the fire. If we sink we sink Big. If we succeed we succeed Big. In all of it, God will get the Glory. YOU DOWN.

Here is what we need and what you can do:
Prayer and more Prayer
Do whatever God or your gut is telling you to Do. And Do it BIG. Stop Waiting for Perfect.
Point me back to this post the next time I get depressed and want to quit (PLEASE)

READY - SET - GO

It’s Moving Time

Well, this week marks a big step in the journey of our company. I have spent the last 2 years dismantling a prosperous graphics company and starting over. This week I move into my new office in Uptown Charlotte. It is a small office - nothing big -but it is big in the life of the company. It will be the first time I have established a headquarters. And more important it is in the heart of the business and financial district.

Our rebranding is just about straight - the new website is being finished - and my new products are being manufactured. I want to take this time to thank all of my friends, clients, and family for walking with us through this transition. You are greatly appreciated.

I will see you on the other side.

Track Time Get Paid

Track Time and Get Paid

Its all about money when it comes to running a business (or even a household, for that matter). Now, by using your iPhone, you can keep track and manage your income where and when you need to.

GetPaid!

Isn't this what it's all about? And this app makes it easy as 1, 2, 3. Track your time, build your timesheet, and create a professional looking, personalized, PDF or HTML invoice that you can email directly to your client or customer. It also tracks incoming payments, provides a graphical view of your income, exports data in .csv format, and generates detailed reports of your job, what payments you have received, all the tasks you completed, and the time you have spent on each job.

Omni Invoice

If you need to generate quotes on-the-spot either while at a customer site or even in the office - Omni Invoice helps you do that. Develop your quote, email it to your client, and generate invoices. It supports tax codes, tax exempt products, discounts (both fixed and percentage amounts) and currency exchange.

Invoice Robot

Keeping the small business in mind, Invoice Robot helps keep the process of creating financial documents in your hands versus the alternative of using an outside person (e.g., an accountant) or management company. It creates invoices, quotes, proposals, and receipts that can be sent as PDF documents.

Invoice2Go

Get going fast and easy with Invoice2go. Start by selecting one of the provided invoice styles and use it as is or customize it to your liking. You can build estimates, produce invoices, issue credit memos, etc. To make it easier for your clients to pay, add a PayPal button to allow instant payment via a trusted safe and secure method.

MiniBooks for FreshBooks

As part of the web-based FreshBooks application, MiniBooks puts all that great functionality at your fingertips via your iPhone. Manage all financial aspects of a client's account including time tracking and invoice create. Then syncs your MiniBooks data up with your FreshBooks accounts.

Quick Invoice

The invoice process can be tedious, time consuming, and terrible for many freelancers and small business owners. Quick Invoice makes the process much more bearable with its quick and straightforward workflow. Pick the customer, choose the service, apply any taxes or discounts, add the “how to pay” information and send it off via email. It is that quick!

Billings Touch

There are those who want to keep time tracking and invoice generation simple. For those who want something more robust, Billings Touch may be the right app. It links all your billable hours, flat-fee services, individually priced items, and expenses. It has a wide array of reports, and includes integration for processing of credit cards.

Staying on top of all the financial aspects can seem like a monumental task. However, by using your iPhone and these apps, you will no longer have a task that’s weighing you down.

45 THINGS FOR YOUR MAN CODE

As someone who did not grow up with my dad, there are many things I had to learn my observation. It was not that my dad was absent, just that I lived with my mom. I wish this list was available when I was young. I have 5 boys now young men, I want to make sure they have this information in case I forgot something. I am not sure who I should give credit for the picture. So if it is yours please comment below. Thank You for posting. I hope this helps every young man.

What are some Man Codes you think should be on the list?

Can You Stand the Test?

As a young boy, I often had to take tests. These tests were a determination as to whether I was fit to move on to the next assignment. Invariability the test would prove whether I had learned the lesson(s) properly.

There is also another type of test used in manufacturing. In this test a piece of metal or equipment is tested to see if it can withstand the pressure. Can it withstand the weight. Can the object just withstand. In life we are tested in the same way.

1. Did you learn the lessons taught.

2. Are you adequately prepared for the next level.

3. Can you stand the pressure and weight.

Elevation and success requires that you pass all three tests. You have to have all three in place to make. So my question to you today.

Is Can You Stand the Test?

Clean Out Your Desk

[blockquote text="“A Clean Desk Is the Sign of a Sick Mind.” plaque seen in gift store" text_color="" width="80" line_height="undefined" background_color="" border_color="" show_quote_icon="no" quote_icon_color=""]

No matter what pithy plaques say to the contrary, every good teacher knows that effective learning starts with a clean slate, a clean desk, and a clean page – and the same is true for business people. According to experts, Americans waste almost 30 minutes a day – 180 hours a year – looking for misplaced items. If your hourly wage is $20, that's $3600 a year! I would wager that there are many things you could do with an extra $3600 or 180 hours this year.

One of the first steps to getting organized is eliminating the clutter, and one of the first places you should tackle is your desk. Here's a six-step approach to streamlining your workspace:

Set aside some time. The scenario you want to avoid: getting elbow-deep in the organizing process, only to have to dump it all back in the drawers and boxes because you have to stop to finish a report, host a webinar, or pick your kids up from school. While how much time you need will depend on the size of your space (and your mess), a good rule of thumb is an hour for a desk, bookshelf, or file drawer.

Pull it all out. Even though it will make a gosh-awful mess, the quickest and easiest way to start your organizing process is to clear out the drawer, shelf, or desktop. Strip it down to the studs and wipe the surface free of dirt, dust, and stray paperclips. Then you'll have a fresh surface to work from.

Sort. Sort the items you pulled out into categories, such as paper, writing implements, books, manuals, etc. As you are sorting, toss any obvious offenders, such as scraps of paper, broken items, outdated receipts, etc.

Decide. Choose how many of each item you need – pens, blank notebooks, etc. – and then toss, recycle, or give away the rest. Trying to decide what you need to keep? Think about what you have space for, as well as what you're likely to use in a reasonable amount of time. You might have room for seventeen replacement cartridges for your printer, but will you use it all before you upgrade to a new printer?

Organize. Replace the items in a logical manner – printing supplies near the printer, business books on a single shelf, computer manuals near the computer, etc. Also think about keeping the most frequently used items in the most accessible place, and less-frequently used items in more remote locales.

Maintain. Unfortunately, organizing is not a one-time event; you must set aside regular times to file paperwork, clear the counters, and take out the trash. Even just five minutes at the end of the day is sufficient to keep a handle on pile build-up.

Organizing is a great way to start your fall. It will help you get a grip on any new needs you have, as well as remind you of tasks and projects awaiting your attention. You'll be ready to tackle whatever comes your way with a clean desk, and a clean mind.

Why I Closed My Company

resetThis morning I read a post featuring Mark Zuckerberg and his take on whether he wanted to build a Facebook Phone. What was interesting is the nugget I gleaned from it. It is the reason, I shuttered my graphics and web-development company. First look at what Zuckerberg had to say.

[box] In terms of new experiences, I think the big theme that we are going to push on mobile is that people keep on asking if we’re going to build a phone, and we are not going to build a phone, right, because it’s not the right strategy for us to build one integrated system where — so let’s say we sold 10 million units, that’d be 1 percent of users, who cares for us, right? The big thing for us is that we have 1 billion people using our products, and we need to make Facebook really good across all of the devices they use, and we’re going to keep on pushing to get more integrated with the system.

When Facebook is a product that people are spending almost 20 percent of their time or more on phones using, it really should be, and I think people want it to be, very integrated into all of the different devices that they have, and that’s what we’re going to focus on. So rather than just building an application that’s a version of the functionality that you have today, I think making it so that we can do — go deeper and deeper, I think is going to be a big focus for us.[/box]

What Zuckerberg is saying is so crucial to my shift in business. I am not trying to build a platform or graphical piece for use with just one person, business, or ministry. Although, It was definitely my business model a few years ago, the model has shifted. To tell the truth graphics was low hanging fruit for our company. It was entry-level positioning for our company with our clients. But as I stated not too long ago, Low hanging fruit is great to start with, but after awhile it will rot your company.

So we shift. Not because we were not good. I think we were one of the premier firms in the urban church marketplace. We shift because it is not about servicing a few but moving a message across the world.

The other part is focus. In business, as in life you find that you have overcommitted yourself and you have bloat. Time-Warner/AOL found that out the wrong way. After merging they realized that company was really too big and had too many directions. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he realized that the company was too stretched and although they were good at a lot of things, they could be GREAT at a few. Friends, that is where I want to be- Not just good but GREAT. How About You?  We are developing new products and product lines as we speak - and look forward to opening them in the marketplace in a few weeks.

Whew. This should be fun. Life Accelerated. Uncommon, Uncomfortable, and Unchained!!!!.

Transitions In UX Design

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar.
