Have One Last Summer Fling

At the beginning of every school year, students from kindergarten through college spend the first few weeks of school getting adjusted and finding the right classes. Key in that process is the placement test. Teachers evaluate their pupils for reading, math level, and overall socialization. These tests not only ensure that students end up in a class that's paced properly and is challenging enough; they also provide an important benchmark to measure progress over the ensuing year.

Businesses could do well by taking the same approach. Figuring out where you are now not only lets you appreciate how far you've come, it also helps identify areas where you may be lagging behind your aspirations. Here are few of the metrics you can look at to evaluate your business:

Web statistics. If you own an online business, web stats are the backbone of your check-up. How many people visit your site, how long they stay, what pages they visit, and whether they return will all help you figure out what you need to do to keep them around longer. Other things to explore: How they arrived at your site, and how you show up in search engine results for your keywords. Google Analytics or your cpanel statistics are great places to start.

Revenue. I'll assume you're in business to make money. So how much are you making? Where is your money coming from? What products are services are most popular? This information will help you make more informed decisions going forward.

Expenses. Money coming in is only half the equation: How much money is going out? Where is it going, and why? Are there easy places to eliminate expenses? Remember, cutting your expenses is an even more effective way to put more money in your pocket than increasing your revenue.

Hours worked. Exactly how hard are you having to work for the money in #2? It's great to make $50,000 a year – unless you're working 100-hour weeks to create that income. Figure out where the time is going and you'll be on the track to increasing your efficacy and your per-hour wage.

Customer satisfaction. It's more cost-effective to sell to a repeat customer than to bring new customers into your business, so how happy are those who purchase from you? Check out your return rate, and your repeat customer rate to see.

Employee turnover. Can't keep a virtual assistant longer than a month or two? It may be them... but if it happens over and over again, it just might be YOU. If your customer turnover seems excessive, dig into why your help is leaving faster than rats off a sinking ship.

Taking an honest look at where you are now is the only way to create a workable path towards a brighter tomorrow. If you see areas where you could use a little extra help or “tutoring,” work with your business coach or mentor to figure out how to bring your skills up to grade level.

Under Perpetual Construction

I used to think that if I could get it perfect with no defects or blemishes that I had it made. That was until I realized that the vitality of a community is gauged by the level of construction going on in the community.  Now I relish that I am now under perpetual construction.

Will You Help!!!!!

Dear Friends,

Hope all is well. As some of you may know, this past April we started on one of the most exciting, yet one of the hardest, journeys of our lives; we started the eXperience charlotte (http://www.theexperienceclt.com) . The eXperience is a church and a para ministry focusing on Jesus Christ through the arts and multi-media. The vision is to create an experience that changes lives, compels people to Christ, and celebrates Jesus. It is simple. Love God, Love People, and Prove it Daily. Already young people from all over are flocking to get to our services to experience Jesus. To God be the Glory.

Many of you know me. I have freely given information, helped you achieve your dreams, or been there with a listening ear. I am not good with asking for help. But your HELP is what we need and quickly.

We have an opportunity to solidify our worship facility for the summer. In order to that we need to raise $1000.00 - $5000.00 quickly. Not an impossible feat. Especially with your assistance.

Here are the details. Go right away to http://www.theexperienceclt.com and hit the give button. Some you that could write a check for the whole sum. (Not going to stop you) for the rest of you, just donate $10.00; go ahead you can do it.

Why is this important?

I sat at my son graduation a couple of days ago and saw thousands of people. Among them where 400 students graduating. Although a day of great celebration, I was burdened with the fact that many of them may never hear about Jesus. I cannot live with that statistic and neither should you. There is an opportunity to make a great difference and positive impact in this community. WILL YOU HELP?

I want to challenge you to give to this ministry because our "bottom line" is much different than the world's...it is souls.  Let's face it - ministry is costly. Excellence in Ministry is Expensive.

Please make checks payable to The eXperience Church and  mail to “the eXperience charlotte,  5634 Timbertop Lane Charlotte, NC 28215 or make a secure donation online at our website, www.theexperienceclt.com.

I am thanking you in advance for your prayers as the ministry grows.  Your seed has been planted.

Stop Reheating the Coffee- Why Multi-tasking is Not Good

This morning I did as I do almost every morning after walking the dog -I made a cup of coffee.

Courtesy of Roger Price

Now I have one of those fancy keurig machines that will make you just a cup of coffee while you wait. Well this morning, while waiting the 1 or 2 for the coffee to brew I decided to go to my desk and send out a couple of emails. As inevitably happens, 2 hours later I realize I had not had my cup of coffee. Well realizing this, I went and put my cup of coffee into the microwave and decided to send a couple of emails while I waited the 2 minutes for the coffee to microwave. Well 2 hours later I am reheating my coffee yet again.

[callout]What am I saying - -If you continue to multitask you will have to keep reheating your coffee. [/callout]

What would have taken me 2 minutes has now taken me 4+ hours.  The coffee is not as good as it would have been had I had it earlier. In your business it might not be coffee, but if you continue multi-tasking instead of concentrating on one project at a time - you will find that it actually takes longer to accomplish and more importantly when you get to it - it won't be as good.

Do yourself a favor - stop reheating the coffee.

The Transition

Everyday I feel myself transitioning to pastor mode. I have consulted and advised pastors for numerous years.

I will say this experience is so different. It is different from the executive roles I have held and even running my own business.

What is different:
I can't quite put my hand on it. I am starting to feel the pain of people I meet. Small things about people are revealed to me. I see identifiers on certain people. It is like that movie where there is glow around certain people but not others that identifies them as a member. (probably not explaining that well)

My prayer life is different. I am finding myself in mire and deeper prayer times. I spend more time in intercession - even for people I don't know.

Finally, I am having to make decisions that go against my business sense. For someone that is as analytical as I am - this can be very disconcerting. But there is a freeing feeling when you just do what God tells you.

My pastor friends say this is just a part of the transition. I guess my calling is being made sure. How do you handle transition. And if you are a pastor share your experience with that first year of transition.

How to Handle Content Diarrhea?

That title is horrible. I know. However I think it describes a phenomenon I have noticed on many blogs and social networks, mine included. What is content diarrhea? Well let me tell this story and you will begin to understand.  Recently I went through my blog and for the first time I noticed the dates on my blog posts --

Here is what I discovered. My blog posts seemed to come in spurts. In other words no consistency. I would have 5 days of posts -- then 15 days of no posts - then 3 days of posts -- then 10 days of no posts.

What I realize is that I write in spurts - I will get an idea and I can write 6 or 7 posts all in one sitting. I then start posting willy nilly --

1. Because I am excited about what I just wrote.

2. I want to see the engagement right away. and

3. I think everything I write in time sensitive.

All of that is hogwash.

To counteract this deluge of articles and posts then nothing, I have found a few tools and strategies to use.

The Strategy-  Write when you feel it -- But then schedule -- I know you were looking for something deep.

Tools to use - Hootsuite, Buffer ,and SocialOOMph all do the same thing. they allow you to schedule you social networks posts days and even weeks in advance.

I also use the scheduling feature in WordPress to schedule my posts throughout the month. 2014-08-12_13-03-41

The newest piece of my arsenal has been to add the editorial plugin -- This plugin allows me to move posts once they have been scheduled in case something does come up.  2014-08-12_13-06-45There you go . This is how I handle content diarrhea. The hidden secret in this method is that is allows me to plan the marketing of each article much better than before. I can now a complete campaign for each article - versus just tweeting once and letting it go. Let me know if this system works for you or what system you use.

Father and Son

There is a father son and a few friends at the table next to me. It is great to hear the excitement in the voice of the son as he explains his world to his father. They are talking movies, food, politics. It is great. It reminds me of my relationship with my sons. I pray that we will always be this close. Just to have the ability to talk and share.

Every year for the next few years - I will lose a son to college. I say "lose" - because there is a transition - from father to advisor.  A change from "do what I say" to "here are my suggestions". It is a careful balance, but exiting. Nothing has been greater than watching these wonderful boys grow up to be men. I can't wait to see the future.

Ok, I almost got teary-eyed sitting in this cafe.  I didn't grow up with my father - so there are some connections that I missed. I do, however, remember he would come and pick me up for the movies, the circus, and other events.  These eye opening occasions helped to shape my perspective on the world. I try on a daily basis to do the same for my kids. I am glad to have reconnected with my father and can share my boyz with him.

Kind of reminds me of the role God has played in my life -
