Create

My hard drive crashed.  And while there is a multiplicity of files that I have lost. What I have not lost is my ability to create.  In fact in most cases, I can re-create everything that I've lost.

So my friend as long as you are alive and able to create, don't worry about what you've lost.

Independence and the Future

17089885826_fc2903fef7_zWell is has been a year since I put on my big boy pants and moved to Uptown Charlotte. A lot has happened, the business model has changed. The company has taken on a brand of its own. I have made many mistakes, but had many triumphs.

Every time I walk through those golden doors and get on the elevator I am reminded of God's faithfulness. You see, when I first moved to Charlotte 7 years ago, I told God I wanted to be in the heart of Charlotte. At the time, I thought it was just a dream. Uptown in any city is expensive. Charlotte is no exception.  But not only am I here, but I am at the crossroads of Charlotte.I literally can look out my window and see the spot where the city began.

In this crossroads in the 4 corners on what is called Independence Square are 4 statutes. The four bronze statues at Independence Square were given to the City of Charlotte by The Queens Table, a philanthropic group.  The statues were created by Washington D.C. sculptor Raymond Kaskey.

The statues of Transportation, Commerce, and Industry represent elements of the past which have contributed to Charlotte’s growth as a major commercial center.  The three statues are all looking towards the fourth statue, which is called Future.

The best part is my window faces the statute Future. This means everyday I walk through a square called Independence at the Crossroads of the City and See my Future.  The symbolism is not lost on me.  When I was at the crossroads of my business and my life, I needed to be free. In fact my future is predicated on living free. Free from the confines of limited thinking.  Free from the Status Quo. It is how I have created the culture of the ByrdOlogy Group. Disrupt the Status Quo.

I would like to take this time and thank everyone that have been so supportive. Without your encouragement..... I would thank the people that stood by that grabbed this vision and made it a reality.

I am not sure what the immediate future will entail. I just know that it will be epic.  I am excited. I am reminded that in business as in life you can start again.

Again thank you for a wonderful year.

I Play

When life gets rough. I use what God has given me. I pull out my recording equipment and I play. I don't have a certain sing bi just play.

I use my gift and guess what when I am done, I feel better. Thank God for His favor.

Just Live the Life

12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Today I wanted to cuss someone out. Yes I did. I promise you I did. Every fiber of my body wanted to lash out. Wanted to fight back and defend myself.

Here was the scenario. My wife received an email from a "friend" of mine that said some pretty hurtful things. My instinct was to get on the phone and let him know about himself. My instinct was to put my religion on the shelf and let him have it. My wife convinced me to just leave it until the morning. I woke up his morning fully intending to carry put my thoughts from the night before. I mean I am justified right?

That is when I read 1Peter 2: . Oh my. God has such a sense of humor. Did that scripture really say suffer? Did it really tell me to hold my Tongue? Yes it did. In fact the Bible urges us to so bright a light in our walk that even those that despise us will say - they Have a Great God.

Well that kind of settled it for me. When faced with "haters" my best weapon is to just live the life.

12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Filters and Folders: Automation Makes Productivity Painless

Imagine logging into your email and being able to see at a glance what needs attention right now, all the information related to your current projects, and a list of items you put away to read later. How much time would that save – just because you wouldn’t have to search for that email a potential client sent last week?

Plenty, you can be sure. And all it takes is a little setup of folders and filters (or rules, as some email clients call them).

Planning Your Folder Setup
Every modern email host and client supports some kind of folder structure. In Outlook and Mac Mail, for example, you can create folders within (or outside) your main “Inbox” folder. The same is true for free email providers such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Gmail goes their own way and offers “labels” instead. Labels act like folders, without cluttering up the interface. A few minutes with the help files for your email provider of choice should give you all the information you need to set up folders within your account.

Your business structure and the way you prefer to work will determine how you set up your folders. For example, you might want to create a folder for each client, for each project, or nested folders for both. You might even want folders titled “Requires Action” (for emails that contain to-do items) and “Requires Response” (for emails you need to answer).

Other helpful folders might be “Read Later” for newsletters you want to read, “Buy This” for sales emails that contain products you’re considering, and “Receipts” for things you’ve already purchased.

Using Automation Rules
Once you have your folder structure set up, it’s time to add some rules to automatically file your income mail. That way, you don’t have to open the same email multiple times – you only have to look at it when you’re ready to work on that project or you’re looking for something to read.

Like folders, most modern email systems offer automation rules. You can set up rules to move incoming mail to a folder, flag it for easy location, or even delete it. Rules can be based on a number of different criteria, including sender address, subject, keywords, who it was sent to, and whether or not it contains an attachment.

The easiest way to set up rules (or filters, as they’re known in Gmail) is to build each one based on a piece of email you receive. For example, if you receive an email from a client to your Gmail box, and you want to file all future emails from her to the folder you’ve created, you would simply open the email, click the “More” button, and choose “Filter messages like these.” Then just follow the prompts. All future emails that match your filter criteria will be treated the same way.

Most other email systems have similar features. Again, a few minutes with the help files will have you creating rules to handle all your incoming mail. And once you’ve got your folders and filters set up, your email inbox will be a much cleaner, less stressful place.

Deleting the Extra

Just finished the morning - Deleting 170 Gigs of duplicate, misplaced, and extraneous files.   Just like in life, you never know how much extra you pick up in the hard drive of your mind, your heart, and just your space.

Misplaced -

Over the years I have dealt with feelings that, although not detrimental to me, were in the wrong place.  Misplaced feelings or emotions will devastate your effectiveness.  Not because they are bad, but because they are misplaced.  Many times you get frustrated at your family only to find out later that the frustration was related to your job - and you were taking it out on your family.  This is an example of being misplaced.

Duplicate -

As a result of having misplaced files, I would often find myself downloading duplicate files (to save time) but only to find that I had 3 or 4 of everything and can't remember which file is the original (right) one. Duplicate Emails, duplicate files, duplicate pictures. This one doesn't have to be deep. What do you have in your space that is duplicated. More importantly what are you trying to duplicate that someone has already shown you the way or invented. What have you taken from your past and duplicated in your present. I just might be time to clean out your duplicates.

Extraneous -

I found a program that will go through your hard drive and delete extraneous language files. It seems every program you download or load on your computer comes with files for various languages. Although this seems like a worthwhile endeavor at the end of the day - you will probably never speak Russian or Chinese.

I thought I would only find a couple of files - I actually deleted 10 gigs of extraneous language files from my computer.  What are you downloading from the universe that is doing you no good?  Some of us download attitudes and perceptions from our friends. We download biases and prejudices.  These are things that are not helping you to get to the next phase of your life.

All of these things are not helping you to get to the next phase in your life. Take a moment to take inventory of your life, your space, your relationships, and see what you can delete.  As it certainly made my computer move faster, I promise it will help you achieve your dreams faster.

Take Off Your Clothes (My Tribute to My Grandfather)

Today marks the one year anniversary of my grandfather's passing. One year ago, I spent the morning calling relatives and relaying the news.

I thought I was prepared. But I was not. What I have realized over the last year is that I had been in a huge depression for several years. A downward spiral that was stealing my creativity. I was preparing not for the death of my grandfather, but I had been preparing my own death. Death of my dreams, death of my calling, and the death of my destiny. A slow painful death where I just let it go, without care.

A funny thing happened when my grandfather died. I wrote a blog post that was called "Lessons From My Grandfather". You can read it here. In this blog post I listed several lessons I had learned throughout the years of my grandfather living with me. This blog went on to become a talk and presentation and basically a battle cry from my soul. You see my grandfather didn't leave me in sadness. He left me with gladness. He left me a blueprint for success. A reset if you will. He left me with the gift of HOPE and DETERMINATION.
