Even if You are Bleeding Don’t Quit

Am I a Habit or Do You Really Love Me?

This morning as I got ready for my day – I turned to the old 70’s show “Good Times”. This show, while dated, always seems to have a moral that is still needed in today’s society. In this episode, the mother, Florida, has become so overwhelmed by the cares of life. The cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids, even having breakfast prepared for her husband, James, when he wakes up. All of this before she even goes to her own job. Making her feel inadequate and frankly taken advantage of.

As the show progresses we find Florida having lunch with her boss who wines and dines her and treats her, as Florida puts it, like a Lady. Well, as with any great show the ultimate happens. James finds out that this other man has been treating his woman to lunch and flowers and so forth. Boy was he angry, how dare someone try to “cozy up” to his wife. But as Florida quickly explains, there is nothing going on between the two, but she does like the way he makes her feel. “Like a Woman” -Like she matters.

Florida asks this important question,

“When was the last time you made me feel Like a Woman.”

James replies like most typical men

“Just the other night”.

“No not like that – I mean make me feel like you cared.”  replied Florida. ” I want to know, “

“Am I a Habit or Do You Really Love Me?”

For lots of us the ritual of going to church, praying, reading the Bible, etc. has become a habit. Our obedience to these ordinances are robotic and impersonal at best. Have you been going through the motions without any thought to the relationship you are building with God. I had a conversation with a good friend of mine, and we discussed the mercy of God, and how we are not even worthy of that mercy. A understanding not shared by many. In fact, when posted on Twitter he received a few posts asking why do you not feel worthy of mercy?

It is not a self depreciating comment, but more of an understanding that God’s mercy is not a right. It is not something we merit. More importantly when we get to a point that we think that God’s mercy is just something we are supposed to get regardless. We have made God a Habit and are now taken advantage of the relationship.  At any time, we forget the blessings and mercy of God are because he love us and not that we are that great. We are acting out of Habit not Love.

God is Asking You -

All the time I get proposals from different pastors or ministers about the state of their marketing, evangelistic, or outreach initiatives. The answer always comes down to the same thing. WHY SHOULD I CARE? Let’s face it folks. We live in an opportunistic self-centered society in which the I or the ME has taken over the WE.

Gone are the days of community – but let me get the most out of this situation mentality. We see it in the news. We see it in the schools. we see it in our children. And more importantly, we see it in churches. What is interesting is the self-centered marketing ploy does not always come from the parishioners. It comes from the pulpit. in the form of because I say so style of communication.

Here is a quick note. Gone are the days when your church was the only player in town. Location is not a basis for joining a church these days. In fact, denomination is not really a requirement for church attendance. This means the method of the message needs to change. Hear me out – not the message – but the method of the message.

As a leader, you can no longer just state it and expect it to happen.  Let me show you a couple of communication points:

We have Bible Study on Wednesday -   Why Should I Care.

Come learn the tools that will change your life and propel your future, Every Wednesday

The first example tell me what is happening – but the second tells me why I should care.

If you answer that question – you will push your evangelism and outreach through the roof.

There’s a Shaking Going On – Can You Stand

Urban Church MarketingI was sipping my coffee the other day, remembering that year prior, I was making my daily 2 hour train commute. Although, relaxing in the morning, the trip home in the afternoon, especially on Fridays sometimes turned into a 4 -6 hour commute.

The platform would be littered with people trying to make it home for the week-end. I would pile myself into the already overstuffed train car; not finding any seats, I would maneuver through people trying to find a little space to breathe. I would be jostled, pushed, and sometimes stepped on, as the train would lurch from side to side. I would hold on for dear life just to keep from being thrown to the floor. My only consolation, was knowing that soon I would be home.

Yet again, I find myself being jostled, pushed, and stepped on, by the train of life. I still find that my sole consolation, is knowing that soon I will reach my destination. Friends, there is a shaking going on. My question to you – Are you willing to Stand and Hold on until you get to your destination?

WHY

This blog is my rantings and ravings as i try to figure out my purpose in life. Sometimes irreverent, it is relevant to the duality of the man. The opinions on this page are my own and as such should not be considered the gospel truth.

These are my unfiltered thoughts about life and leadership, children, ministry, and just trying to stay sane in an insane world.
