28 Feb ByrdOlogy – Just Some Thoughts I Decided to Jot Down
Every day I get more excited -- If you know me. This has been a journey. Something I had to do in order to be successful. This book has been sitting on my hard drive for a year -- My perfectionist would not let me release it. You see, I suffer like most people I coach, from "it is not as good as everyone else" syndrome. I know you get me. This will be a long post -- but Here is the story -- I have been looking at new office space for 6 months. So the other day, the concierge in my pulled me aside (he is a minister as well) and said,
"Are You Serious about moving to bigger space."
I wholeheartedly said, "yes let's go see what you have." So he takes me to floors and offices that are fully gutted. I mean there are no internal walls, I can see the studs and everything. So I said to him, where is the office space. His answer. God told me to tell you, You need to look at a shell because He wants to fully customize your brand and look from scratch.
To fully appreciate this, Let me take another step back. Over the past 3 weeks, prior to this conversation, I have been studying a company called Red Ventures. They have been called the GooglePlex of the east coast. Well, a business mentor was in town the previous day and invited me to see the Red Ventures complex. I was totally blown away and left the campus saying this is the culture and the type of building I want for my company. So you can now see why my concierge what my concierge said had my head spinning.
I left the office tour - bittersweet -- One -- I was totally jazzed and excited that the opportunity to build my own was available to me. Right in my building. Same address -- different floor (now that will preach as well). The bitter was that I now had to figure out how to pay for it. To refit an office was going to be at least 150k to 250k -- If I purchased the space outright- an additional 250-350k or if I just rented -- we are talking an extra 10k a month. I sat at my desk looking at the floor plans despondent. So I do what I do in those circumstances. I said - Ok God -- You showed me the vision, now tell me how to get the provision. What I heard threw me for a loop.
I expected there to be a new idea -- a new product -- a new process. Even a word that said call so and so and they will write you check. Something. What I heard was release the book. COME ON-- You mean the book that isn't perfect? The book that doesn't have as many pages as others? THAT BOOK? COME ON. But I know what I heard.
Here is the take home -- A seed in your hand won't grow until it is planted. There is also the old adage that a closed hand can't receive anything new. What am I saying? Your future success may depend on you releasing something you have been holding onto for years. In fact, the blessing is in the release. I may never see a profit from this book. But I will receive a profit from the release of this book.

I can't get if I don't give. The life of my company is not determined by the newest idea, but by the seed planted with a book, I have held onto for years. So my friends today I am planting the seed. I am opening my hand. I am breaking the perfectionist curse. Imperfections and all.

PS. I didn't expect to write all of this and I didn't let my wife edit or proofread. All mistakes are mine and are free. It's my gift to you.
